BA004
A day full with interesting visits to archaeological sites and plenty of times for relaxing on the beach starts with a visit to the remains of Gortys, an important Greek-Roman town. Most important finding here are stones inscribed in Cretan Doric language - known as the Gortyn Law Code -, dating back to the 5th century BC.
About 61km south of Heraklion lays Crete’s second most important Minoan archaeological site, the Palace of Phaestos, whe-re the famous Phaestos disc was found. The disc itself represents one of the world’s mysteries : the clay used to make it cannot be found in Crete and the language impressed on both sides in a circular manner has still not been deciphered.
After Phaestos we will travel short distance to the coastal village of Malata, known for the strange – shaped caves in the rocks at the beach.
